Musar Jeune 2014 – Appelation & Villeneuve wines £14
I have to admit that I’ve been hooked on Chateau Musar’s wines, ever since I first tasted one back in the 1980’s.
My highlight was a magnum of 1990 Musar red that was an utter treat.
This is Musar Jeune, the new kid on the block and it has a slightly more funky presentation than the original which looks like (and tastes like) something from a reassuringly crumbling chateau in burgundy-shire…….
There’s a lot going on in the glass, with slightly restrained fruit, over a deep, deep purlpy red, fit for an imperial toga.
There’s also gentle nudges of cigar and cinnamon to savour before you take a gargle.
In the mouth, there’s a heavenly balance of red fruits, overlaid with a decent sprinkling from the spice box so that this is deeply satisfying, revealing more and more depth as subsequent sips build up layer after layer of goodness.
There’s a bit of tannin in these so that it might stand a wee bit of bottle age but not too much!
This would stand up to a whole range of clarets and wanne-be clarets from the new world but at about a half to a third of the price.
