Kapoho - gone but not forgotten

Writer: JohnGJohnG

Back in 2016, Fiona and I enjoyed a tour of Hawaii where we visited Oahu (the island with Pearl Harbour), Kuai, Maui and Big Island.

There we stayed at 2 different locations with family. The second was at a spot called Kapoho. Our view was of the ocean which sat at the bottom of the garden where you could simply pop over the wall and snorkel to your heart's content.

About 100 metres away, for variety you could have a dip in champagne pond where the water was warmed by the volcanic activity deep underground, evidenced by the bubbles of gas that gave it its name. A ten minute drive found you at the Kapoho tide pools which were festooned with gorgeous coral and enlivened by schools of juvenile fish darting hither and yon.

It's all gone now, thanks to the force of Kilauea, the local volcano (every Hawaiian island has one, or two, or three....).

It's odd to think that the house where we had such a great time is now buried under millions of cubic feet of solidified lava and that the whole area has changed beyond recognition - it's now part of a new peninsula where formerly it was a series of bays.

Thankfully nobody was killed or even seriously injured but the local mayor is on record (showing a phenomenal degree of positive attitude), to the effect that it's not all bad as now there's even more prime ocean-side real estate.....
